It's one of the most solvable problems in residential HVAC, but the solutions are ranked by cost, and most homeowners don't know what the real options are. Here's the full breakdown.

Why Is My Upstairs Always Hotter in DFW Summer?

Your upstairs is hotter because of three unavoidable physics facts. First, hot air naturally rises — any heat generated downstairs migrates up through stairs, open foyers, and gaps. Second, your attic is 140-160°F during DFW summer afternoons, and that heat radiates directly through the upstairs ceilings regardless of insulation. Third, your thermostat is almost certainly downstairs, where it reads satisfied while the upstairs is still 10°F hotter.

Solution 1: Verify the System Is Healthy ($85-$150)

Before spending money on airflow improvements, confirm the existing system is working correctly. A dirty coil, low refrigerant charge, or failing blower can drop capacity 20-30% and make any imbalance worse.

  • Home 2,500-3,500 sqft, 5-8°F imbalance, existing system healthy: Tune-up, duct sealing, possibly add upstairs return.
  • Home 2,500-3,500 sqft, 8-12°F imbalance, existing system aging: Consider zoning if system has 5+ years of life remaining, or plan for dual systems at replacement time.
  • Home 3,500+ sqft, 10°F+ imbalance: Dual systems at next replacement. Zoning is a Band-Aid on a system that can't handle the load.
  • Home 3,500+ sqft, existing system at end of life: Dual systems now. Don't spend money on a failing single system.

What Doesn't Work (Common Myths)

Myth 1: "Close downstairs vents to push more air upstairs." Closing vents builds static pressure in the ductwork, which reduces airflow across the evaporator coil and can cause freeze-ups. The air doesn't redistribute — it's wasted. Leave every vent open.
