Is Your AC Short Cycling? What It Means and What to Do

Short cycling is when your AC turns on, runs for less than 10 minutes, shuts off, and restarts within a few minutes — repeatedly through the day. Healthy DFW summer cycles run 15-30 minutes. Short cycling means something specific is wrong — most commonly an oversized system, a refrigerant leak, a frozen coil, a dirty condenser, a thermostat issue, an electrical fault, or a clogged filter. What Is AC Short Cycling, Exactly?

Normal cycling looks like: thermostat calls for cool, system runs 20 minutes, satisfies setpoint, shuts off for 10-20 minutes, kicks back on. Short cycling looks like: system kicks on, runs 5 minutes, shuts off for 3 minutes, kicks on again, repeatedly all day. The outdoor condenser starts and stops dozens of extra times.

Trust your ears on this one. If you can hear the outdoor unit cycling on and off constantly from inside the house, that is short cycling. You can also count: walk outside and time the next three cycles. Anything consistently under 10 minutes is a problem.

What Are the 7 Most Common Causes of Short Cycling?

Every short cycling call I run in DFW comes down to one of these seven causes. Listed roughly in order of frequency.

1. Oversized AC (The #1 Root Cause)

The most common short cycling cause in DFW, especially in newer subdivisions where production builders defaulted to "a little bigger to be safe." An oversized AC reaches setpoint in 5-8 minutes, shuts off, restarts when the temperature drifts back up 10-15 minutes later. It never runs long enough to dehumidify or reach steady-state efficiency.

Signs: House feels cold but clammy at setpoint, humidity above 55%, big temperature swings between cycles, summer electric bills higher than comparable homes nearby, system is relatively new but always short cycling.

2. Low Refrigerant From a Hermetic Leak

AC systems are sealed (hermetic) circuits — refrigerant does not evaporate or wear out. If refrigerant pressure is low, there is a physical leak somewhere in the copper, coils, or fittings. Low refrigerant causes the evaporator coil to run colder than designed, eventually tripping the low-pressure safety switch and shutting the compressor off. Pressure builds back up, the switch resets, the system restarts. The cycle repeats every few minutes.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen coil chokes airflow across the indoor unit, which trips safety switches and forces the system into short cycles. The coil freezes for several reasons: dirty filter blocking airflow, low refrigerant from a leak, failing blower motor, or a heavily dirty coil itself.

4. Dirty Condenser Coil

The outdoor condenser rejects heat from the refrigerant to the outside air. When it is coated in cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, pollen, or dust, it cannot reject heat properly. Refrigerant high-side pressure climbs, the high-pressure safety switch trips, the system shuts off, pressure normalizes, the switch resets, the system restarts. Short cycle, repeating.

Signs: Outdoor unit visibly dirty (fins coated, debris in the cabinet), short cycling worsens on hotter days, outdoor unit feels excessively hot to the touch, summer bills creeping up.

5. Failing or Misplaced Thermostat

A thermostat installed in direct sun, near a kitchen heat source, on an exterior wall, or with a weak battery reads inaccurate temperatures. It calls for cooling sooner than the house actually needs it, then satisfies quickly when the local reading swings.

Signs: Short cycling correlates with sunlight hitting the thermostat, thermostat is 10+ years old, low-battery warning shown, thermostat installed on a kitchen wall or above a TV.

6. Electrical Faults (Capacitor, Contactor, or Control Board)

A weak start capacitor cannot launch the compressor cleanly, causing safety timeouts. A pitted contactor makes intermittent connection, dropping the call for cool. A failing control board sends incorrect signals to either the indoor or outdoor unit.

Signs: Humming or buzzing from the outdoor unit, audible clicking sounds at startup, short cycles with irregular patterns (not a steady rhythm), system "hard starts" with a brief delay before the compressor engages.

7. Clogged Air Filter

A severely clogged filter restricts airflow enough to freeze the coil and trigger short cycling. This is the cheapest possible cause to rule out — and the one I find more often than I would like.

Signs: Filter visibly black or gray, filter has not been changed in 6+ months, weak airflow at supply registers, return grille feels dirty.

How Much Damage Does Short Cycling Cause?
