How Much Does AC Replacement Cost in DFW?
AC replacement in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex runs $8,000 to $26,000 depending on tonnage, tier, and whether you're pairing with a heat pump or electric system. Frosty's HVAC offers three flat-rate tiers — Goodman (15 SEER2), Carrier (18 SEER2), Trane (20+ SEER2). For sizing and efficiency baselines, see the ENERGY STAR central AC buying guide and DOE AC sizing guidance.
From Omar, Co-Owner
“Most competitors refuse to post prices because it makes it easier to ‘work you’ at the kitchen table. I flipped that on its head — you get the real number here, in your pajamas at 10pm, before anybody knocks on your door. If another contractor tells you my Trane 5-ton quote is a ‘loss leader,’ ask them to write their number down and sign it. That's the test.”

What Actually Drives AC Replacement Cost in DFW?
Five variables move the number in the calculator above by thousands of dollars. Tonnage is the biggest — a 1,500 sqft Farmers Branch ranch needs a 2.5-ton system; a 4,500 sqft Flower Mound two-story needs 4-5 tons and often dual systems with separate upstairs and downstairs units. Efficiency tier comes next — the gap between 15 SEER2 (Stay Cool) and 20+ SEER2 (It's A Frosty Life) is typically $6,000-$8,000 on the same tonnage because variable-speed equipment costs more to manufacture and warranty. System type is the third: gas split is the DFW default, heat pumps add roughly $2,000 (but unlock federal 25C tax credits on qualifying models), and electric-only systems run about $1,000 less than a matched gas install. The fourth variable is condition of the existing ductwork, refrigerant line set, and electrical panel — a 1970s Farmers Branch home with aging gray flex duct and an undersized panel can add $1,500-$4,000 in supporting work to make a new system actually perform. The fifth is labor warranty length: a 10-year labor warranty runs $3,500 more upfront but saves a homeowner from any out-of-pocket labor over a full decade of service calls.
Should I Replace or Keep Repairing My Current AC?
The rule of thumb most licensed techs use is the 50% rule — if a proposed repair exceeds 50% of a new system's price and your unit is past 10 years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense than the repair. A major compressor or evaporator coil repair on a 14-year-old R-410A system might buy 2-3 more years; a new 15-20 year system at $8,000-$14,000 buys a fresh manufacturer warranty plus meaningful efficiency improvements. Systems still running R-22 refrigerant (installed pre-2010) are a special case: R-22 has been phased out under EPA Section 608 since 2020, reclaimed supply now runs $100-$200 per pound, and any significant leak on an R-22 system usually tips the math toward replacement on its own. R-410A equipment production ended January 1, 2025 under the AIM Act — existing R-410A systems can still be serviced, but new installs now use R-454B or R-32. If your current system is 12+ years old and facing any major repair, punch the numbers through the calculator above to see how the replacement math compares against the repair quote.
What's Included in Every Frosty's Replacement, Regardless of Tier?
All three tiers include: a Frosty Thermostat (smart WiFi thermostat — our brand), a new disconnect box and electrical whip sized to the new condenser, an overflow condensate shutoff float switch, condensate drain treatment, a copper line-set inspection with replacement if needed, the city permit, and full cleanup and haul-away of the old equipment. No tier arrives stripped of essentials to hit a lower price point. The tier differences are mechanical: Stay Cool uses Goodman 15 SEER2 single-stage equipment with a 1-year labor warranty; Stay Frosty upgrades to Carrier 18 SEER2 dual-stage equipment, adds ductwork inspection plus sealing of up to 5 connections, and extends labor warranty to 2 years; It's A Frosty Life runs Trane 20+ SEER2 variable-speed equipment, includes a full ductwork inspection and seal, vibration isolation mounts for near-silent operation, a 5-year labor warranty, and a free year of Frosty Club membership. All new equipment uses R-454B or R-32 refrigerant per current AIM Act regulations. Financing through Optimus, Synchrony, and GreenSky — $0 down on approved credit, 50% deposit at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions About AC Replacement Cost
How much does a new AC system cost in Dallas-Fort Worth?
AC replacement in Farmers Branch, Coppell, Irving, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Grapevine typically costs $7,500–$20,000+ depending on system size, type, and efficiency tier. Frosty's HVAC offers three tiers: Stay Cool (Goodman, 15 SEER2), Stay Frosty (Carrier, 18 SEER2), and It's A Frosty Life (Trane, 20+ SEER2). Use our free calculator above for your personalized price.
What size AC do I need for my home?
AC sizing depends on your home's square footage: under 1,500 sq ft typically needs a 2-ton system, 1,500–2,000 sq ft needs 2.5–3 tons, 2,000–2,500 sq ft needs 3–3.5 tons, 2,500–3,000 sq ft needs 4 tons, and 3,000+ sq ft needs 5 tons. Our calculator recommends the right size based on your home. A professional load calculation during the free in-home estimate confirms the perfect fit.
How long does AC installation take?
A standard AC replacement takes 4–8 hours for most homes. Frosty's HVAC handles everything in one visit: removal of the old system, installation of new equipment, electrical connections, refrigerant charging, city permit, and full system startup testing. We don't leave until every room is cooling properly.
What financing options are available?
Frosty's HVAC offers $0-down financing through GreenSky, Synchrony, and Optimus on approved credit. A 50% deposit is required at booking. We accept Zelle, credit cards, and debit cards — no checks. Monthly payments can be as low as $80/month depending on your system choice.
What's included in the installation?
Every Frosty's installation includes: new outdoor condenser, new indoor air handler/furnace, Frosty Thermostat (smart WiFi thermostat), new electrical whip and disconnect, overflow condensate shutoff, drain treatment, full R-32 refrigerant charge, city permit and inspection, 10-year manufacturer warranty registration, old system removal, and complete cleanup.
What's the difference between GOOD, BETTER, and BEST tiers?
Stay Cool (GOOD) features Goodman 15 SEER2 single-stage equipment with 1-year labor warranty. Stay Frosty (BETTER) upgrades to Carrier 18 SEER2 dual-stage with ductwork inspection and 5-year labor warranty. It's A Frosty Life (BEST) is our premium Trane 20+ SEER2 variable-speed system with full ductwork sealing, vibration isolation, and 10-year self-insured warranty.
Do I need to replace my furnace when I replace my AC?
In most cases, yes. Your outdoor AC condenser and indoor furnace/air handler work as a matched pair. Mixing old and new equipment reduces efficiency, can void the manufacturer warranty, and often causes premature failures. Frosty's always installs factory-matched systems for maximum performance and warranty coverage.
What refrigerant do new AC systems use?
New AC systems use R-32 or R-454B refrigerant, which are more environmentally friendly and energy efficient than the older R-410A. All Frosty's HVAC installations use modern R-32 refrigerant. We never install systems with discontinued or outdated refrigerants.
