"Which brand should I get?" is the second-most-common question I get during replacement consultations, right after "how much does it cost?" There's a lot of brand loyalty in HVAC — some homeowners are die-hard Carrier fans, some swear by Trane, some want Goodman because their brother-in-law had one for 20 years. Here's my honest, 8-years-of-installing-all-three-brands breakdown. No brand warfare, just reality.
What Are the Three Tiers Frosty's Offers?
We offer one brand at each of our three package tiers:
Stay Cool — Goodman 15 SEER2 (Single Stage)

Stay Frosty — Carrier 18 SEER2 (Dual Stage)
- Most popular choice, sweet spot for most homes
- 2-year labor warranty
- Includes ductwork sealing up to 5 connections
- $10,000-$21,000 depending on tonnage
It's A Frosty Life — Trane 20+ SEER2 (Variable Speed)
- Premium, longest warranty, best comfort
- 5-year labor warranty
- Includes full ductwork sealing, vibration isolation, 1 year Frosty Club
- $14,000-$20,000+ depending on tonnage
All three include the Frosty Thermostat, R-454B refrigerant, new disconnect box, electrical whip, overflow shutoff, drain treatment, copper inspection, permit, and full cleanup.
What Are the Real Differences Between Goodman, Carrier, and Trane?
Goodman
Ownership: Owned by Daikin, the world's largest HVAC manufacturer.
Manufacturing: Houston, Texas. All-American production.
Strengths:
- Best value in residential HVAC
- Simple, reliable, field-serviceable designs
- Widely available parts (most DFW supply houses stock Goodman)
- Strong compressor warranty on select models
- Dramatically improved quality over the last decade
Tradeoffs:
- Generic components compared to Carrier/Trane
- Shorter manufacturer labor warranty on lowest tiers
- Fewer premium features at entry level
- Lower SEER2 ratings at base tier (15 SEER2 vs 18-20+ at higher tiers)
Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners, rental properties, smaller homes, homeowners staying 5-10 years.
Carrier
Ownership: Part of Carrier Global Corporation (independent since 2020).
History: Founded by Willis Carrier, inventor of modern air conditioning. 120+ years.
Strengths:
- Broad product line covering every tier
- Strong 2-stage and variable-speed offerings
- Reliable parts availability
- Excellent dealer network in Texas
- Good balance of features, price, and longevity
- Infinity series is widely considered one of the best residential HVAC systems available
Tradeoffs:
- Mid-range pricing (not cheapest, not most expensive)
- Some Carrier models have proprietary control boards
- Installation quality matters a lot on higher-end Infinity systems
Best for: Most DFW homes. Carrier (Stay Frosty) is our most popular tier because it delivers the best overall value — dual-stage operation, 18 SEER2 efficiency, 2-year labor warranty, and includes ductwork sealing.
Trane
Ownership: Part of Trane Technologies, publicly traded.
History: Founded 1885. Residential HVAC since 1931.
Strengths:
- "Unstoppable" reputation for durability
- Climatuff compressors are some of the most reliable in the industry
- Advanced control systems (Trane XV series with ComfortLink II)
- Premium build quality throughout
- Full variable-speed capability at top tier
- Longest warranties (in our lineup, It's A Frosty Life Trane includes 5-year labor warranty)
Tradeoffs:
- Most expensive of the three
- Proprietary parts and control systems (harder to service with third-party parts)
- Overkill for smaller homes or tight budgets
Best for: Larger homes (2,500+ sqft), homeowners staying 15+ years, those who want the longest warranty, and anyone prioritizing the absolute best residential HVAC experience.

Which Brand Is Best for Your DFW Home?
My honest recommendations by situation:
Budget-constrained or starter home:
- Goodman Stay Cool tier
- 2-3 ton typical: $9,500-$14,000
- Solid equipment, 1-year labor warranty

- Carrier Stay Frosty tier
- 2.5-4 ton typical: $13,000-$19,500
- Dual-stage operation handles DFW summers well
- 2-year labor warranty, ductwork sealing included
- Expect 15-18 years of service life
Large homes (3,000+ sqft) or long-term homeowners:
- Trane It's A Frosty Life tier
- 3.5-5 ton typical: $20,000+
- Variable-speed compressor delivers best comfort
- 5-year labor warranty (longest in our lineup)
- Expect 15-20+ years of service life

Does the Brand Matter More Than the Installer?
No. This is the most important point in this whole article.
A properly installed Goodman beats a poorly installed Trane every single time. Installation quality affects:
- Refrigerant charge (must be to spec by weight, not pressure)
- Ductwork sizing and sealing (affects capacity and efficiency)
- Electrical work (affects reliability and safety)
- Tonnage sizing via Manual J calculation (affects everything)
- Drain line slope and trap (affects long-term reliability)
- Brazing quality on refrigerant lines (affects leak-free operation)
- Vacuum pull time (affects system cleanliness and longevity)
I've seen 5-year-old Trane systems failing because of bad installation. I've seen 12-year-old Goodman systems running like new because installation was dialed in. The equipment matters, but the installation matters more.
This is why every Frosty's install follows the same quality standards regardless of tier. Same Manual J calculations, same refrigerant procedures, same torque specs on electrical connections, same vacuum pull times. The only difference between tiers is the equipment itself.
What About Other Brands Like Lennox, Rheem, or York?
All reputable brands. We don't install them because standardizing on three brands (Goodman, Carrier, Trane) lets us stock parts, train every tech on specific systems, and maintain predictable pricing. Every HVAC contractor picks their lineup based on their service model — ours is flat-rate honesty with three clear tiers.
If you've got a Lennox, Rheem, or York system and need repair, we can still service it. We have EPA 608 universal certification and service all residential brands. We just don't install them on new replacements.

How Do Warranties Compare?
Two types of warranty matter:
Manufacturer warranty (parts):
- Goodman: 10 years on parts with registration (lifetime on some compressors)
- Carrier: 10 years on parts with registration
- Trane: 10 years on parts with registration (some XV models 12 years)
These are similar across brands for registered systems. The key is to register your system within 60-90 days of installation — we handle this for every Frosty's customer.
Labor warranty (from installer):
- Stay Cool (Goodman): 1 year
- Stay Frosty (Carrier): 2 years
- It's A Frosty Life (Trane): 5 years
- Optional 10-year extended labor warranty: +$3,500 on any tier
The labor warranty is where brand matters. Manufacturer warranties cover parts but not the labor to replace them. Our extended labor warranty options are what protect you from surprise repair bills in years 1-5.
Which Brand Has the Best Resale Value?
If you're selling within 5-10 years of replacement, all three brands add similar value to the home. Home buyers rarely care about brand at the AC condenser — they care that the HVAC is recent, well-maintained, and has remaining warranty. A 5-year-old Goodman with good maintenance records adds just as much value as a 5-year-old Trane in most DFW markets.
How Do I Decide?
My 3-question framework:
- What's your budget? If the top tier stretches you financially, stick with Stay Cool or Stay Frosty.
- How long are you staying? Under 7 years = single-stage is fine. 7-15 years = dual-stage. 15+ years = consider variable-speed.
- Do you have humidity or comfort issues in your current home? If yes, dual-stage or variable-speed will noticeably improve comfort.
