Can I Use Any Smart Thermostat With My System?
Most, but not all. Compatibility depends on:
1. Wiring type. Modern HVAC systems use 24V low-voltage control wiring (R, W, Y, G, C wires). Most smart thermostats need a C-wire (common/power) to stay powered. If your system doesn't have a C-wire, it needs to be added — we can do this as part of any install for $150-$250.
2. System type. Heat pumps, dual-stage, and variable-speed systems need thermostats that support their specific control logic. Not all smart thermostats work with all system types. The Frosty Thermostat works with everything we install.
3. Age. Systems older than early 1990s may use 120V line-voltage controls (common in older electric resistance systems) that aren't compatible with any 24V smart thermostat. In those cases, the thermostat update is tied to a larger system replacement.
We verify compatibility during every visit. If your system needs a C-wire or has compatibility issues, we tell you upfront before doing any work.
What About Multi-Zone or Dual-System Homes?
Homes with zoning or dual HVAC systems need one smart thermostat per zone. A two-zone Flower Mound home needs two thermostats. Dual systems (independent upstairs/downstairs systems) need two as well — and both can be managed through the Frosty Thermostat app for unified control.

Are There Features I Should Skip?
A few "smart" features I've seen cause more headaches than savings:
"Learning" modes that override your preferences. Some thermostats try to learn your schedule automatically and get it wrong for weeks. I prefer manual scheduling where you set it once and it stays set.
Excessive notifications. Some thermostats send a notification every time the temperature changes. Turn off non-essential alerts.

Self-install is possible if your wiring is compatible, but I've seen DIY installs miscategorize wiring and short out systems. If you're not comfortable working with 24V control wiring, pay for professional install.
