Cracked Heat Exchanger: Safety First

A cracked heat exchanger means combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — can leak into your home's air supply. We NEVER repair a cracked heat exchanger. The only safe fix is a full furnace replacement. If I find a crack during diagnostic, I red-tag the unit on the spot and show you our three replacement tiers. Learn more about CO safety at the EPA.

What Are the Most Common Heating Problems in Prosper?

Texas winters are mild, but furnaces still need regular service — and when they fail on a 28°F January morning, they tend to fail all at once. Here's what I see most often on Prosperheating calls, and what each one typically costs to fix.

Furnace won't ignite

Failed hot-surface ignitor ($400) or coated flame sensor ($400). Both are same-day fixes. The $85 diagnostic identifies the exact cause.

Blowing cold air instead of hot

Usually a failed ignitor, bad flame sensor, or a stuck gas valve. We run a combustion analysis to confirm the exact cause before quoting.

Loud buzzing or grinding

Dying inducer motor ($500-$1,300) — the draft fan pulling combustion gases through the heat exchanger. Replace before it takes out the control board.

Short cycling (on/off/on/off)

Dirty flame sensor, failing limit switch, or restricted airflow. Can be an early warning of a heat exchanger issue — we diagnose carefully.

Gas smell or CO alarm

EMERGENCY — leave the house, call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667, then call us. We locate the leak source and repair or red-tag as required.

Cracked heat exchanger

Carbon monoxide risk — NEVER repaired. Full furnace replacement required for safety. We confirm with combustion analyzer and bore-scope inspection.

Why ProsperHomeowners Trust Frosty's for Heating Repair

North Texas doesn't have Chicago winters, but Prosper still sees 20-30 freeze nights a year, and that's enough to expose every weak point in a furnace that sat unused from April to October. Prosper's housing stock is 2010s-2020s new construction, so the furnaces we service are mostly 90%+ AFUE two-stage or variable-speed units from Carrier, Trane, and Lennox. The failures look different from older East Plano or East Dallas calls: instead of cracked 20-year-old heat exchangers, we're dealing with integrated control boards that lose their pairing with variable-speed blowers, pressure switches fouled by lint, and inducer motors that hit their service life at the 10-12 year mark.

The heat exchanger is still the one I worry about most, even on newer equipment. Crack a heat exchanger and you get carbon monoxide in the supply air — which means we're not repairing it, we're condemning the furnace and quoting a full replacement. Every diagnostic we do in Prosper includes a CO check at the supply register and a visual inspection of the heat exchanger where we can access it. If I see rust, scale, or flame impingement, I tell you straight. I'd rather lose a repair job than let a family breathe CO.

A lot of Prosper homes — especially newer builds in Windsong Ranch and Gentle Creek Estates — run heat pumps instead of gas furnaces. In Prosper's climate (20-30 freeze nights, 200+ cooling days), modern variable-speed heat pumps make strong sense. When they fail in winter, the issues are different from furnaces: failed defrost boards ($500-$800), bad reversing valves ($1,200-$1,800), TXV issues on the outdoor unit, and communicating thermostats that lost the handshake. Heat pumps run in cooling mode briefly during defrost cycles to melt outdoor coil ice, so steam off the outdoor unit on a cold morning is normal — not a failure. Call (469) 254-0548 and we'll diagnose for $85 (waived with repair).

Heating Repair FAQ for Prosper, TX

How much does furnace repair cost in Prosper, TX?

Diagnostic $85 flat (waived with repair). Common Prosper furnace repairs: hot-surface ignitor $400 ($340 for Frosty Club members), flame sensor $400 ($340), gas valve $400-$1,200 ($340-$1,020), inducer motor $500-$1,300 ($425-$1,105), integrated control board $600-$1,200 ($510-$1,020), pressure switch $250-$550. We're flat-rate, so you see the total before we start.

Is my furnace safe to run if the heat exchanger is cracked?

No. A cracked heat exchanger leaks combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — directly into your supply air. We don't repair cracked heat exchangers because they can't be safely welded back to spec. Instead, we quote a full furnace replacement. Every Prosper diagnostic includes a heat exchanger inspection and CO check at the supply register.

Do you repair heat pumps in Prosper?

Yes. Many Windsong Ranch, Lakes of La Cima, and Gentle Creek Estates homes run heat pumps instead of gas furnaces. Common heat pump failures include defrost board faults ($500-$800), failed reversing valves ($1,200-$1,800), outdoor TXV issues, and communicating thermostat handshake problems. We service Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Lennox, Rheem, and all major residential brands.

Why does my Prosper furnace keep shutting off after a few minutes?

Short cycling on a furnace is usually a dirty flame sensor (most common), overheating due to restricted airflow (clogged filter or dirty blower), or a failing pressure switch. On newer Prosper equipment, it can also be a communicating thermostat that lost pairing with a variable-speed blower. The $85 diagnostic identifies the cause. Flame sensor cleaning runs $400 flat ($340 for members) and solves the majority of these calls.

My Prosper furnace smells like something burning — should I call?

First time in the fall — that's usually dust burning off the heat exchanger and goes away in a few minutes. Normal. If the smell persists, is electrical, or smells like gas, shut the system off at the thermostat and call us at (469) 254-0548. Electrical smells mean an overheating motor or wiring; gas smell means leave the house and call the gas company first.
