Cracked Heat Exchanger: Safety First

A cracked heat exchanger means combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — can leak into your home's air supply. We NEVER repair a cracked heat exchanger. The only safe fix is a full furnace replacement. If I find a crack during diagnostic, I red-tag the unit on the spot and show you our three replacement tiers. Learn more about CO safety at the EPA.

What Are the Most Common Heating Problems in Euless?

Texas winters are mild, but furnaces still need regular service — and when they fail on a 28°F January morning, they tend to fail all at once. Here's what I see most often on Eulessheating calls, and what each one typically costs to fix.

Furnace won't ignite

Failed hot-surface ignitor ($400) or coated flame sensor ($400). Both are same-day fixes. The $85 diagnostic identifies the exact cause.

Blowing cold air instead of hot

Usually a failed ignitor, bad flame sensor, or a stuck gas valve. We run a combustion analysis to confirm the exact cause before quoting.

Loud buzzing or grinding

Dying inducer motor ($500-$1,300) — the draft fan pulling combustion gases through the heat exchanger. Replace before it takes out the control board.

Short cycling (on/off/on/off)

Dirty flame sensor, failing limit switch, or restricted airflow. Can be an early warning of a heat exchanger issue — we diagnose carefully.

Gas smell or CO alarm

EMERGENCY — leave the house, call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667, then call us. We locate the leak source and repair or red-tag as required.

Cracked heat exchanger

Carbon monoxide risk — NEVER repaired. Full furnace replacement required for safety. We confirm with combustion analyzer and bore-scope inspection.

Why EulessHomeowners Trust Frosty's for Heating Repair

North Texas doesn't have the winters of Chicago, but Euless still sees 20-30 freeze nights a year, and that's enough to expose every weak point in a furnace that sat unused from April to October. The calls we get from Euless in December and January are dominated by three failures: cracked hot-surface ignitors ($400), dirty flame sensors ($400), and stuck or failed gas valves ($400-$1,200). All three have the same symptom — furnace tries to light, fails, goes into lockout. In South Euless, Bear Creek, and Fuller Wiser — the 1970s-90s housing stock — I also see a lot of aging inducer motors ($500-$1,300) that grind or fail to spin up.

Euless furnaces have one failure mode you don't see as often in cleaner-air cities: flame sensors fouled by airport particulates. The flame sensor is a small rod that detects the flame; when particulates coat it, the furnace reads 'no flame' and locks out even though the burner is actually firing. In Euless I clean flame sensors 2-3x more often than in cities further from DFW Airport, and I recommend every Euless homeowner add flame sensor cleaning to their fall heating tune-up (included with Frosty Club Premium) whether the furnace has symptoms yet or not.

The heat exchanger is the one I worry about most in aging Euless systems. Crack a heat exchanger and you get carbon monoxide in the supply air — which means we're not repairing it, we're condemning the furnace and quoting a full replacement. Every diagnostic we do in Euless includes a CO check at the supply register and a visual inspection of the heat exchanger where we can access it. If I see rust, scale, or flame impingement — more common on 25+ year old systems than younger ones — I tell you straight. I'd rather lose a repair job than let a family breathe CO. Heating Repair FAQ for Euless, TX

How much does furnace repair cost in Euless, TX?

Diagnostic $85 flat (waived with repair). Common Euless furnace repairs: hot-surface ignitor $400 ($340 for Frosty Club members), flame sensor $400 ($340), gas valve $400-$1,200 ($340-$1,020), inducer motor $500-$1,300 ($425-$1,105), pressure switch $250-$550. We're flat-rate, so you see the total before we start.

Is my furnace safe to run if the heat exchanger is cracked?

No. A cracked heat exchanger leaks combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — directly into your supply air. We don't repair cracked heat exchangers because they can't be safely welded back to spec. Instead, we quote a full furnace replacement. Every Euless diagnostic includes a heat exchanger inspection and CO check at the supply register.

Why does my Euless furnace flame sensor keep failing?

Because Euless sits under the DFW Airport approach path, airborne particulates coat flame sensors faster than in cleaner-air cities. When the sensor is fouled, the furnace reads 'no flame' and locks out even though the burner is firing. Flame sensor cleaning runs $400 flat ($340 for members) and solves it. I recommend adding it preventively to every Euless fall heating tune-up.

Do you repair heat pumps in Euless?

Yes. Some Euless homes — usually electric-only builds or newer replacements — have heat pumps instead of gas furnaces. Common heat pump failures include defrost board faults, failed reversing valves, and outdoor TXV issues. We service Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Lennox, Rheem, and all major residential brands.

My Euless furnace smells like something burning — should I call?

First time in the fall — that's usually dust burning off the heat exchanger and goes away in a few minutes. Normal. If the smell persists, is electrical, or smells like gas, shut the system off at the thermostat and call us at (469) 254-0548. Electrical smells mean an overheating motor or wiring; gas smell means leave the house and call the gas company first.
