Why Does My AC Smell Musty or Like a Damp Closet?
A musty smell from AC vents means mold or mildew is growing on the evaporator coil, in the drain pan, or in the ductwork. This is by far the most common AC odor complaint I get in DFW. The cause is moisture plus time. Your evaporator coil is constantly cold and wet during summer operation, the drain pan holds standing water, and DFW's 60-75% summer humidity creates ideal mold growth conditions.

Why Does My AC Smell Like Rotten Eggs or Sulfur?

Dust burn-off (normal): Happens the first time you run heating or AC after months of disuse. The smell is faintly sweet-dusty, not sharp. It clears within 30-60 minutes of continuous operation. Why Does My AC Smell Sweet or Like Chemicals?
A faintly sweet chemical smell near the indoor air handler typically indicates a refrigerant leak. Modern refrigerants — R-410A, R-454B, R-32 — have a mild sweet odor when they escape. Not everyone can detect it, and the smell tends to settle low because most refrigerants are heavier than air.
The safety context: R-454B and R-32 are classified A2L per ASHRAE Standard 34, meaning lower toxicity and mildly flammable. Modern systems are engineered with refrigerant detection sensors and safety controls specifically for this class. R-410A is A1 (lower toxicity, non-flammable). Why Does My AC Smell Like Something Died?
A rotting or decaying smell from AC vents almost always means a dead animal in the ductwork, the air handler closet, or near the outdoor condenser. Unfortunately common in DFW — rodents, squirrels, and occasionally birds enter attics through soffit gaps and roof penetrations and occasionally die in HVAC equipment.

Why Does My AC Smell Like Cigarettes or Smoke?
A persistent smoke or cigarette odor from AC vents means smoke residue has accumulated on the evaporator coil, blower wheel, and ductwork interior. Common scenario: you recently bought a home from a smoker. Less common: someone in the household smokes indoors (the residue builds even on outdoor smokers if smoke drifts toward intakes).
Why the smell lingers: nicotine and tar particles are sticky.
