If your Lewisville home needs a new AC system in 2026, here's everything you need to know — from real pricing to refrigerant changes to what's different about Old Town installations versus newer builds near 121. I'm Mariafernanda Jacobo, co-owner of Frosty's HVAC and holder of TDLR Texas License TACLA126718E. Omar (our EPA 608 Universal certified lead technician) and I have been serving Lewisville homeowners since 2018, and I want to make sure you have the information to make a confident decision.
Last February, Omar installed a Stay Frosty (Carrier 18 SEER2) system for a homeowner in Castle Hills whose original R-22 system had seized on a 34°F night. We had the old unit recovered, new system installed, and heat running again by 4 PM the same day. That's the kind of turnaround you get from a locally owned, licensed team that isn't juggling commercial accounts — every install is residential, permitted through the City of Lewisville, and signed off by me personally as the license holder. What's Changed About AC Systems in 2026?
Two major changes affect anyone buying a new AC in 2026:
1. New refrigerants (R-454B and R-32): All new residential AC systems now use R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A. This is mandated by the AIM Act, which phases down high-GWP (Global Warming Potential) hydrofluorocarbons. R-454B has a GWP of 466 compared to R-410A's 2,088 — a 78% reduction.
What this means for you: the new refrigerants are slightly flammable (classified as A2L by ASHRAE), which required safety updates to system designs. All modern systems have built-in leak detection sensors. Practically speaking, the risk is minimal and the systems are fully approved for residential use.
2. SEER2 efficiency standards: The new SEER2 testing standard (effective January 2023) uses realistic duct pressure conditions. The federal minimum for our region is 15 SEER2. Older systems rated 13-14 SEER on the old scale are well below this threshold — so any new system is a significant efficiency upgrade.
What's Different About Replacing AC in Old Town Lewisville vs. Newer Builds?
Lewisville has a wide range of housing stock, and the installation approach varies significantly:
Old Town Lewisville (1950s-1970s, near Main Street and Mill Street):
- Electrical: May need panel upgrade from 100A to 200A for modern high-efficiency equipment. We coordinate with licensed electricians.
- Ductwork: Original grey flex duct is likely deteriorated. Budget for duct replacement ($700/run, Member: $595/run) alongside the system.
- Space: Smaller attics and closets may limit equipment options. We measure and verify fitment during the initial assessment.
- R-22 to R-454B conversion: Your old system likely uses R-22. The new system uses R-454B with new line sets (included when copper lines need replacement).
Newer builds near 121 / Castle Hills / Valley Vista (2000s-2020s):
- Standard installation: Modern electrical, adequate attic space, existing R-410A line sets (evaluated for reuse).
- Ductwork: Usually in decent shape, may only need sealing ($350, Member: $297.50) rather than replacement.
- Dual systems common: Many newer Lewisville homes already have two systems — quote may be for one or both depending on condition.
Near Lewisville Lake / Garden Ridge area (1980s-90s):
- Mixed condition: Ductwork age varies. Systems are 25-35+ years old if original — definitely replacement candidates.
- Attic access: Some of these homes have challenging attic configurations that require extra installation time.

How Do Lewisville Homeowners Choose the Right Tier?
I always tell homeowners to focus on three factors: budget, how long you're staying, and comfort priorities.
Choose Stay Cool ($8,000-$14,000) if:
- Budget is the primary concern
- You're planning to sell within 5 years
- Your home is well-insulated with good ductwork
- You're replacing an R-22 system and any modern system is a massive upgrade
Choose Stay Frosty ($12,000-$18,000) if:
- You want the best balance of cost and long-term savings
- You plan to stay 7+ years (energy savings offset the higher cost)
- You want quieter, dual-stage operation
- You have a two-story home with cooling balance issues
Choose It's A Frosty Life ($16,000-$20,000+) if:
- Maximum comfort is the priority
- You have a large home (3,000+ sq ft) or persistent temperature issues
- You want the lowest possible energy bills
- You plan to stay in the home 10+ years
